| C&A launches new Soft Starters
and expands standard products range as part of its focused growth
strategy |
|
In December, C&A has
announced the launch of a new and innovative product, Soft
Starters, and added yet another product in their offering
basket. As a leading supplier of AC Drives, C&A is all
set to increase its standard product market penetration and
spread in India. In line with this strategy C&A is expanding
its range and has launched two separate Soft Starter series,
SUPERNOVA and IMS2 Series. These are available in the range
from 7.5kW to 800 kW.
Soft start is a technology used to start induction motors
gently. Soft starting accelerates the motor more smoothly
than direct on-line (full voltage) starting or other forms
of reduced voltage starting.
Soft start works by controlling the amount of current delivered
to the motor while it is starting. This prevents current
transients and supply disturbances. Soft starting also limits
the level of starting torque, extending the acceleration period
and enabling the motor to build up to full speed more gently.
Soft start offers electrical, mechanical and economic benefits.

|
Electrical
benefits
Soft starting controls the current surge
at start, preventing voltage dips and surges on the electricity
supply. Soft starters can reduce electricity charges by reducing
the demand peak associated with direct on-line motor starting.
By reducing the electrical extremes experienced by equipment,
soft starting can reduce electrical damage such as pitting or
erosion of contacts.
Mechanical benefits
Soft starters prevent torque transients.
The high torque transients that occur with traditional electromechanical
starting methods can damage the motor, load, transmission and
coupling equipment.
Soft starting reduces excessive wear on components including
pipes, valves, couplings and bearings. Soft starting and stopping
also prevents damage to products car ried on conveyors, which
can be jolted and broken by sudden movement, and can reduce
damage to fluid systems from water hammering..
Economic benefits
Reducing the electrical and mechanical strain on the motor and
the load reduces the risk of damage. Soft start can reduce
the amount of maintenance required, minimising maintenance costs
and production downtime.
By limiting the extremes of current and torque at starting,
soft starting can reduce the headroom required in system specifications.
This allows systems to be constructed more conservatively (for
example, smaller shafts, bearings, pipes and valves).
Soft starting can enable use of larger motors on limited supplies,
such as generator sets. Starting the same motor direct on-line
would require a larger and more expensive generator.

IMS2 Series
IMS2
Series Soft Starters are a total motor starting solution.
They include all the functionality expected from an
advanced and technically superior soft starter. IMS2
soft starters retain motor protection and monitoring
functions even when soft starter is bypassed. These
can be connected to the motor in 6 Wire or inside delta
configuration enabling the starter to control motors
50% larger than possible with standard 3 Wire connection.

SUPERNOVA
Series
The SUPERNOVA Series Soft Starters
provide soft start and soft stop control for new or
existing motors.. The starters are compact and reliable,
and feature a built-in bypass contactor to reduce heating
during run. This makes SUPERNOVA ideal for installation
into switchboards or starter enclosures.
While SUPERNOVA CSX soft starters are ideal for soft
starting motors having external motor protection, the
CSXi soft starters provide complete motor control solution
in a compact design.
